CertLane - Future of IT Certifications

VMware Certification Facts

VMware is a company that creates a desktop and server virtualization software that simplifies or streamlines the IT operations across the entire IT infrastructure, especially in data center on mobile devices or through Cloud. The VMware certifications are must-have credentials for many IT professionals, especially for those who are working with support virtual environments and data centers. These certificates are majorly based on vSphere and other versions of the associated technology.

The VMware certifications fall into 4 categories:

  • Data Center Virtualization
  • Cloud Management and Automation
  • Network Virtualization
  • Desktop and Mobility
Each of these categories mentioned above offers various levels of certificates, such as:
  • VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX)
  • VMware Certified Associate (VCA)
  • VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

VMware currently offers a single VMware Certified Associate (VCA) credential. VCA is a common certification to all the VMware solution tracks. VCA-DBT (Digital Business Transformation) is designed for the architects and executives who have a deep understanding of the technologies associated with the VMware Cloud Foundations and Cross-Cloud Architecture solutions, including vSAN, NSX, vSphere, and vRealize. To earn this certification, a person must pass the VCA-DBT test.

Typically, any associate-level credential requires passing one exam. The individuals who want to earn professional- and advanced professional-level certifications must pass appropriate tests after earning a prerequisite certificate.

Achieving the VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) credential is usually more involved. The candidates for VCDX have to obtain multiple prerequisite certifications, then proceed to build a production-ready VMware solution and defend it successfully in front of a team. Only after this intensive process one can achieve the VCDX certification.

VMware badges

Those candidates who have achieved certain combinations of the VMware certifications are usually awarded the VMware badges, which are highly valued in the IT industry. For example, an individual is awarded a VCDX badge after earning the VCAP Deployment credential within the same solution path (NV, DCV, CMA, or DTM).
